Expiring contract

They can't legally or business wise put me on tiered data automatically when my contract is up without me agreeing to it can they?

They can change your contract at any time. You can get out of it without paying an EFT if they change it in a way that is adverse to you. More than likely they wouldn't change your contract just because it expired but they have the rights to

I don't blame you...but they likely won't since it would allow you out of the contract without penalty they will generally only make changes when you upgrade since that is when you will be signing again.

I'm trying to keep my unlimited as long as possible, along with those of us who don't plan to bail completely. I use 6-7 gigs per month, and 5 might be doable with some disciple, 2 is not. I want to avoid the extra $20 per month for that (unless it goes up by the time I need it) as long as I can.

I hear you. I used to use a lot of data downloading roms/apps a lot on the network...found it better to just get home internet, sure have to pay more but it is more reliable and I get more use from other devices out of home internet.

I use WiFi at home too. I just don't have it at work, and I play Pandora while I drive almost always. Either way, I'll keep this a.couple more years at least.

Yeah if they do it like they did the switch to tiers we will know when it is gonna happen in advance.

You can also go the used route...getting a phone that has been out for a bit for half the cost is always nice...done that myself

Well I would be friggin pissed

Once your contract expires they can make any change they want, just as you can leave with no penalty.

My guess is all Verizon would have to do is send you something in the mail that on such and such date, (say 2-3 months later) they are going to switch you to a tiered/shared data plan of 2GBs. If you want a larger plan fill out the enclosed paper and mail to Verizon... Or stop by your local VZW store and make the changes there. If you do nothing, we will take this to mean you are agreeing to the 2GB plan.

Another possibility would be to direct you to your "My Verizon" webpage and have you choose the plan you want there.

Or something to that effect.

Don't worry, they'll figure out a way....

If they are true to their word they will leave the contract be if you allow it to expire...they can change it even before it expires...that right is reserved for them within the contract...

Yuuuuuppp!! Sounds all true. I think they will move somewhat slowly on this point. Time will tell however....

I doubt they will change existing contracts that have expired...too much trouble on their part...they know people like new phones and most people will choose to save some money to upgrade instead of paying full retail for an upgrade

My GF is rockin the good old droid on V network. She wants to upgade to the new max but told she will no longer have u/l data.

i myself wanted to get V back with the bionic was coming out but didn't have a lte phone then and the clock ran out to enroll before the dam phone came out so to sprint (and unlimited data) i went. happy with the concept of unlimited data, not so happy with speeds but that may all change in the next few months. my market is one of the first to be getting LTE so who knows!

anyway, i think she is looking to maybe head over to sprint now as she is a data hog as she drives alot and streams both audio and nav. that, and i can get her my 18% discount :-)

Navigation does use data, but it doesn't use much. It is nowhere near as bad as music/video. For example, I used navigation yesterday for ~5 hours and my usage for the day (including web surfing, etc) was ~35MB.

I looked an my usage some more and the 5 hours of navigation probably used ~30MB.

Yes you are correct, but it depends on the navigation. I use google nav and in conjuction with google maps. So when I'm navigating my phone is constantly updating the map. Now I'm not sure how much I use because I've never checked like you have.

So in restrospect, now that I think about it, I was assuming using Google maps was a data hog. It's very possible you are 100% correct and I'm all wet!

Patiently/impatiently waiting for official info on the Maxx HD/Fighter,

I think for most people isn't not a huge data hog. For a relatively small area, the maps are actually pretty lightweight. And since Google maps cache's data it only downloads maps for a particular region once. So If you only ever use it for your commute, or errands in town it really doesn't have to download that much. If you drive alot in a wide number of areas, then I suspect maps/nav can use quite a bit of data.
