Help External Hard Drive Access

Ok, so I'm a few weeks into owning the Note 4. Great device.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to access my external hard drive.

I have an external hard drive connected to an asus router. Works great, also works great as a cloud. I can access that router from other computers weather I'm on lan or somewhere else using wifi. Anyway, asus has an app called AiCloud and for android it allows me to access that external hard drive any time any where. Pretty snappy right ? The tough part is there is no option to download anything from the external hard drive to the Note 4 using that app. I've tried accessing the external hard drive using the url and once again everything is viewable, but absolutely no way to download a single file. I've tried to share this issue with asus, but the customer support is painstakingly slow because I have to send them an email, then wait a few days for their response which doesn't address the issue, anyway it's not really accomplishing anything. Just a note, the AiCloud app worked great on the iPhone.

So, with that said, does the Note 4, or any android device need to have a setting turned on in order to download files ??
Is there another way, or another app that can be used to access my snappy little personal cloud ??

I do this because, I take lots of pics, process them on the desk top and then dump them into a folder that I would like to be able access from the Note 4 so I can add pictures without having to wire it up to the desktop.

Any suggestions are certainly appreciated.
Thank you,
Pete

ES Explorer seems to work pretty nice as long as I'm on the network. I want to figure out how to access the external hardrive when I'm away from the network. I can access it using the URL, but the phone won't allow me to download anything. I still think it's an asus software issue, but they're hard to get hold of.
