External sd music files disappeared on Galaxy S3

So I had uploaded a bunch of music onto my external sd card via Airdroid. It had been working perfectly, but then all of a sudden I saw that practically all of my music was gone. I had been using the free trial for Poweramp at the time, and it still showed all the songs but when I went to play them it would say "Folder is missing and/or not readable."

I wondered if it had something to do with the free trial being done, but I can't find the files on my phone and when I go to my Airdroid account online, there are no files listed on my external sd anymore. But on the storage summary it lists how much memory is taken up, this time though it shows very little of music files and a lot more video files (I wondered if I somehow took too many videos? But that doesn't make sense, there's still more memory left and files don't just replace each other..)

Sorry, kind of ignorant when it comes to the details, but usually I'm able to figure it out. If anyone's able to provide any insight it would be much appreciated.

I've had a similar issue on my S3, except I don't lose all of my music, just some of my songs and albums. When I check the files in my Music folder on my extrrnal card, I find the folder which had contained the now missing files has been renamed. The renamed folder always starts with the greek letter "mu" and ends with ~1 and is empty. I've reloaded the files, tried erasing and reformatting the external card and reloading the music again and am still losing a lot of my music files.

A common cause of music going missing from an SD and seeing corrupted filenames and directories is that you've got a counterfeit SD card. There's a lot of them around especially from eBay.
