Help Facebook contact name sync

Is there a good way to Sync your FB account with your contacts that DOESNT require First and Last name on your contacts list ?

Ive tried the (join) method but it just overwrites and give my contact a full name.

I want "Danny" to stay as "Danny" not "Danny Haroldson"
yet still pull his FB pics and updates.

Any suggestions ?

If you put just "Danny" in the nickname field, does that do it? I've never tried it.
