Help Facebook messenger battery drain!

I have a LGG3 and this started the other day. I looked at the battery usage and it was the Messenger app killing my battery. I uninstalled and put a note on Play Store.

I've edited a couple posts to remove off topic comments (one of mine as well).;) Facebook has rightly taken ownership of the issue and has hopefully addressed it. Let's keep the thread focused on the battery drain issue and whether the fix they identified and implemented resolved that issue.:)

Facebook has released an official 'Facebook Lite' app which is a stripped down, lightweight version of the original facebook app which also includes the old messenger tab. It is less aesthetically pleasing, but It has helped my Moto Es battery life by a lot.

If you want to try it, it can either be downloaded from google play (only in certain countries).

***mod edit*** Alternate download link removed. If FB wants an app available in other regions they are the ones to make it available.

If you don't mind the interface, the switch is worth it. It is very efficient with mobile data, the whole app is a fraction of 1 MB, and it uses less battery on my phone.

Both Facebook and its accompanying messenger app are complete bloatware at this point. I suggest either using facebook lite or just using the mobile site via your browser. This type of app development seems to be becoming the norm for both Facebook and Google. Both eat battery and are highly intrusive privacy wise.

Still seems to be draining my battery like mad.

I have taken to force stopping the app after I use it, otherwise it eats 20% battery over the next hour.

If you look through a search engine, it's possible to grab facebook lite from other sites and sideload it yourself. I've loaded it onto my LG Tribute. It's quite nice for a basic app. I also removed Messenger, as facebook lite has that feature built in. Hopefully I can still get messages via vibrate. Might even load this onto my tablet, heh. One downside is that it can only be used in portrait mode, but I'm okay with that.

I uninstalled messenger and got two days of glorious battery life and now the Facebook app is doing EXACTLY the same thing. Facebook was accounting for just under 50% of battery drain and battery life went down the toilet. Seems to coincide with facebook updates now appearing on the lock screen

Turn off lock screen notifications within the app.

Really irritating that facebook lite is arbitrarily blocked on everything I have available, which is now primarily my Note 3.

Both my wife and I experienced terrible battery drain today on our nexus fives and the culprit for both was the Facebook messenger app! I uninstaller the app and while it was gone the battery was fine but reinstalling caused the drain again.

I'll uninstall it again, obviously but I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this issue? I see the app was updated on the 4th of Feb but I always update my apps as soon as I get the notification and the drain only happened today so not sure if maybe it took a while to push the update or something?
Take the time to DISABLE AUTO UPDATE & Read PLAY COMMENTS 1ST! I learned this 1 the hard way, trust me. FB Messenger has had a recent Update. The majority of comments were 3 Star ☆☆☆ & said battery drain had increased at an alarming rate. Thanks to a few mins of reading, I skipped the update an all is well.

Problem with that is that play store loves to still ignore these settings and shove the latest update on you anyway...

or FB can be like Skype and basically ban everything but the most up to date version from being able to log in at all.

I don't understand why Play Store is acting up on you. Never had a problem with it regarding updates. Always make sure that it doesn't download updates... The only thing that's ever forced on me is the My Account app on my LG Tribute running on Virgin Mobile. I have to delete the update of that every time it's downloaded. Otherwise, no issues.

As far as the messenger app, the latest one works for me. No issues with battery drain. The two devices I have them on aren't high end; they run on KitKat 4.4.2. I use Greenify on both to reduce overall battery drain while they're idle.
