Facebook widget and app....

I am not notified by anything when I have a new message or post on Facebook. There is no indicator that there is a new notification. What can I do so I am. Also, how does Facebook refresh when I go into it?
 
It should refresh automatically when you open the app. You can also refresh it manually by hitting the menu button. This is also where you can tweak your notifications.
