False advertising? ATT 4G vs. VZW.

I went to ATT to return my Infuse car dock I purchased for my VZW S3. On the wall, there was a large poster stating they have the largest 4G network in the US.
I said no to the sales man and he said they have HSPA+ (or something like that) which delivers 4G like speeds.
I said "like" is not 4G. Isn't that false advertizing since your network is way smaller than Verizon? He didn't seem to care.
 
I don't think it is false advertising. I believe it is considered a form of 4G.
Where I live I have AT&T HSPA+ on one of my phones, and VZW LTE on another of my phones, and the AT&T HSPA download speeds are neck in neck with the VZW LTE download speeds.
 
If I remember correctly, I don't believe either AT&T's or Verizon's current "4G" offerings met the requirements to be called what was originally considered 4G. Carriers basically cried and whined for the governing body (ITU, maybe?) to lower the standards so that they could call their "next generation" 4G. So now it's just a watered down term used for marketing purposes only.
 
Verizon has more 4gLTE coverage than sprint, att and T-Mobile combined. Also on average Verizon's speeds are faster than the other carriers.
 
HSPA+ has pretty comparable speeds, so I guess that's enough to call it "4G", although its really sort of lost its original meaning over the past few years.

VZW has been rolling out LTE quickly, yes. But they are using an early, inferior version of LTE in the effort to be firstest with the mostest rather than really good. Damn shame but it works for advertising. Tests by PC Mag (I know...) and others have proven VZW's LTE service to be slowest, often slower than HSPA+ while burning through battery power quicker.

When T-Mobile rolls out a more advanced LTE network in 2014 we'll see what LTE can really do.
