I am about 2 weeks into enjoying my S3 (I747 AT&T) since upgrading from an iPhone. I really have not had any problems. I live in semi-rural suburbs and normally have about 2 bars of signal and at 4G, NoG or less most of the time. However, the phone works as well as my old iPhone or better on that much signal. Last night I was at a local restaurant in a town with a full strength (all bars) 4G LTE signal. The phone was in sleep mode in my pocket. About an hour into the meal, I noticed that the phone was very warm. I turned on the phone and it had lost 15-20% of the battery in that hour. I used task Manager to see what was running and found the CNN News and Google Map apps running in the background.
The battery display in settings said that cell standby was 52% of battery use. Google maps was 2nd with about 20% and then a long list of apps including the CNN app were no more than 2-5%. I don't know why Google maps was even on the list because I don't recall using that app all day.
I shut both of them down, but 15 minutes later the the phone was still running hot and still losing battery capacity at an accelerated rate. We eventually left the resturant and went home to our low signal house and the phone cooled off and stopped the big battery use.
Can anyone explain this weird behavior? Does 4G LTE really burn the battery at that rate? Any help appreciated.
