Help Fast charge turns itself off

The time before last when I charged my phone, I read the message that (from 25%) full charge would be achieved in 4 hours 38 minutes. On previous occasions it has always announced an hour and a half to full charge.
I managed to find the setting for fast charge (I'm afraid I can't now remember where I found it!) which was actually set on fast charge. All I could think of was to turn OFF fast charge and turn it back on again. I plugged in the charger again and was happy to see a charge time of one and a half hours again.
The last time I charged it, a couple of days ago, I received the same 1 1/2 hour predicted charge time.
Unfortunately, this morning when I put it on charge again I saw the predicted charge time had reverted to 4 1/2 hours. I haven't changed any settings.
Can anyone please explain why the phone appears to have turned off the fast charge facility?

My HTC 10 has the quick charge disabled itself after a while. Restarting the phone usually fixes it.

Re-starting? OK, no problem.
However, I'd be interested in finding out why it keeps changing itself without my making any changes.
Incidentally, could you please remind me where I might find the settings for fast charging? I assume it would be in 'Settings' somewhere. I think I found it by accident last time!

A faulty cable, port, or adapter could be the culprit. Personally I only use fast charging only when I need it, I would usually just leave the phone with a slow charger as it does not heat up the battery and means a longer battery life span. Heat is a battery killer.

Good point. Thanks. Perhaps if I don't need it immediately I'll do the same.

I wonder whether it periodically reverts to slow charge automatically to preserve battery life.

If your phone is running hot above a certain limit it will stop fast charging as a safety. If it's too hot, charging will stop immediately. But not all phones have this feature.

AFAIK, there is no option to turn the quick charge on/off. It's an automatic process, the charger would adjust voltage and current according to the phone's specs.

If the quick charge stops working, it could be either hardware or software. The restarting trick worked for my phone but I can't be sure whether it works for other phones.

Thank you both.
Actually, I have now found the setting for which I was searching.
Settings / device care / battery / settings (3 vertical dots at top right) / Fast cable charging (at bottom of list).
