Help Fastest way start sending SMS?

I jsut recently upgraded from the original Droid Incredible to the GS3. On the Dinc, there was a Search softkey external button that I can assign to bring up Quick Compose on Handcent and send a SMS to a contact. This was very quick and efficient since I send a lot of texts.

However, the GS3 obviously lacks this Search key. Is there anyway I can program a long press of the Back key on the GS3 to bring up Handcent's Quick Compose? Would I have to root the phone? If so, should i wait until 4.1 jelly Bean comes out?

If this is not possible, is there another SMS app I can use that will allow me to assign a long press of one of the physical keys on the phone to bring up quick compose?
 
What launcher are you using? I know that apex and Holo hd allow you to assign different things to the home button.... For example, I press the home button once and AIVC opens up (Kinda like siri).... I'm sure nova launcher would allow this too. You can also assign the home button to bring up the stock Google voice actions that I was used to using on my other phones by holding down the search button.

So anyway, get a different launcher and you can customize it to do exactly what you described, either using the home button or just a gesture on the screen itself.
 
will a launcher such as slow down the phone? Is it replacing TOuchWiz or merely running on top of it? If the former, is there a way to get rid of touchwiz running at the same time?
 
the only way to get rid of TouchWiz all together is to root and flash a custom ROM.

when installing a launcher, you are essentially using a different home screen and app drawer. TouchWiz is still there because that's the whole system. but you won't have to deal with the visual aspects of TouchWiz anymore.

i personally am using Apex Launcher. it seems to act smoother than TouchWiz, and its recent update adds Jelly Bean style configurations.

you can also setup gesture shortcuts. so instead of remapping the back button, you can swipe up or down to launch Quick Compose.
 
Yeah but say I'm in another program like internet or Google Play and I suddenly want to send a text, i would have to exit out and then send the text. But if I remap a quick compose key, I can send the text without having to close my current program.

How much does Nova Launcher slow down the phone?
 
If you text frequently it will be in your recently used apps list. So, say you are in Google Play and want to send a text, hold down the home button and you should see your SMS app there. Tap it to send your text. When done, hold the home button again and select Google Play to return.

Or use Gosms with pop ups on incomming texts to make it super duper easy to reply to.

Geeze I cant believe just how lazy some people can be, as if its too much effort to tap a few icons. :rolleyes:
 
The time you spent making this thread, reading the posts, and replying probably added up to a months worth of tapping that extra icon or two for all the texts you've sent.
 
If I use the recent apps list, I still have to hold down the home button and then scroll to find Handcent and then start typing. But a key reassign would allow me to hold down the key, the handcent would pop up, and I can start texting right away.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with trying to find efficient ways to go perform common tasks, especially since this is an Android phone.

Try an app/launcher that supports gestures ;)
 
I think its funny people are giving you shit for wanting an easy way to compose a message from within an app, i have spent a couple hours of my free time today searching google for the exact same thing.. when i had my htc G1 and my HTC inspire, i was able to quickly pull up quick compose and type away then send the message and my app be right there when i was done.. if you havnt used handcent recently then you have to hit home, then find handcent, send the message and then hold down the home key to return to your previous app.. not only that but some apps dont restore to where you left them, causing you to have to start over which is very annoying..

i think this is a needed feature and i dont think this would be hard for handcent to implement at all..

i had an iphone 4, jailbroke it and it came with activator, for those of you who dont know this application allows you to do ANYTHING on the phone with the volume keys power key home key silence switch and even swiping or pinching on the screen to open apps change volume, replace keys all together and so on.. why doesnt ANDROID have something similar in the first place.. and dont mention tasker because it is not the same at all.

We did. Several times. It's called a replacement launcher. Set a shortcut for a gesture or a press of the home button to bring up whatever you want. Done. Easy. Why are we still talking about it?
 
Tty ChompSMS. I have a quick compose in my notification bar. Just swipe my notification screen and hit compose.

I don't know about you, but I like to spend time reading this forum. The less time I spend tapping that extra icon or two means more time to spend on making threads, reading posts and replying.
 
This solution entails downloading two apps, but the outcome is worth it. :)

You will ultimately be able to pull down your notification bar from within any app screen, and with a single tap on an icon you will be taken directly to the compose screen of your Messaging app. How does that sound?

First download the app Notification Toggle, which is free, and incidentally I wholeheartedly recommend this app to everyone. It allows you to put (additional) system toggles and app shortcuts in your notification shade, which means you can access favourite apps from anywhere via a single pull down and tap.

The notification shade will look something like this:

Now as you can see, I have shortcuts for Camera, Chrome, ES Explorer, Bus Checker, COD, and finally Compose. (I read from right to left because the most important shortcuts are on the right hand side, nearest my thumb ;))

Now, Compose is a custom shortcut, and is different from the other shortcuts because it takes you to an activity within the Messaging app instead of just opening the app like the other shortcuts do. If I had included the basic Messaging app shortcut, it would open the app and then I would have to tap the compose icon within the app (looks like a little pen) in order to begin composing a message. But by including the custom shortcut I go straight to the compose screen.:)

Mind you, that app only eliminates the use of Notification Toggle; you still need to use the QuickShortcutMaker app to access the custom shortcuts that take you to an activity within a chosen app.

Can you add more shortcuts in the notification bar widget in Elixir, or are you limited to the supplied 7 slots? Notification Toggle does allow you to add more shortcuts than that.

I'm not too sure to be honest as I just have my shortcuts in a full length widget down the left of each page on each home screen. That's 9 shortcuts. It all depends on your requirements imo.
