Fear of change

I just found out that the new Samsung Gear 2 isn't compatible with Android 4.2. I have a rooted Galaxy S4 running stock Android 4.2 (without all the pre-installed bloatware). I like my OS just the way it is. I was actually at terms with the idea of having to use exclusive Samsung apps for the added functionality of the watch. Now it seem flashing the ROM and installing a custom os on my watch is the only alternative. Am I correct in thinking that updating to 4.4 could cause things to not work. Even then, I still have the question of weather Samsung Gear is compatible with any phone once the phone has been rooted. So I have difficult choices to make. That is risky no matter how I look at. Also I would like to ask if there is anyone here that prefers 4.4 to 4.2, if so why?

The Galaxy Gear 2 isn't running Android, it's running a proprietary Samsung software (Tizen I think) , so even if you are on 4.4,if you're using a custom ROM, chances are it still won't work.

I was talking about rooting the Samsung Gear, and put a custom rom on the smartwatch. From my understanding Samsung Gear2 is only compatible with a few top-end Samsung phones. These Samsung phones are running android. I am thinking that Samsung is actually using an altered form of android, but still calling it Android 4.4 Kit Kat:thumbdown:

even the Gear 1 needs Android 4.3, unless you want none of the features to work. rooting/rom on a Gear allows a different launcher, Play Store, etc but the tethering eats at your phone battery and it is super slow. notifications, music control, s-voice and the weather clock won't work without Gear Manager.

iirc the Gear 2 is still the Android based watch (demoed it in store) but the Gear Fit is Tizen. still not sure how you tell time with it the way the screen is made. talk about inducing arthritis cocking your wrist to see the time right side up

Well I know the Gear 2 runs Tizen, and although Linux based and maybe having some features like Android, it isn't Android.

Meaning that root methods for this device will need to be figured out differently.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 SAMSUNG SGH I337 4.2.2. Broadband version I337UCUAMF3 kernal version 3.4.0-812098. se-infra@SEP-103#1
Build Number JDQ39.I337UCUAMF3
SELenix status permissive. With AT& T
I am going to make sure this gets in my profile.

Officially there is only one source of update for your phone, and that's AT&T. And you don't get to pick and choose updates, you get what AT&T approves. Which means you get Knox. If you want to go pure Android, know that you will lose a lot of Samsung installed features. Plus the fact that using a custom ROM voids your warranty.
