Few questions on upgrading Galaxy Grand

Hi
I am trying to update my phone to 4.2.2 and I could see a lot of negative feedback's.. I need to know if it is worth upgrading or not..

Secondly, I want to know if a backup is compulsory before an upgrade or its just a precautionary step.. Will the data stay the same in case of a smooth upgrade...

I also wanted to check if its anyway possible to download the latest firmware through kies without my phone connected and once downloaded I can connect my phone and update it.. The reason is its hard for me to connect my phone for such a long time to get it updated..

Appreciating your suggestions and thanks in advance...

Aslam

1. It's always worth updating IMO. 4.2.2 has a lot of new additional features.

2. If you upgrade through Kies, the program makes a backup of your phone, plus enables the UDPP (User Data Preservation Protocol), so nothing gets lost. However a backup of app data is a good idea because sometimes the apps don't play along well with the update and you either have to reinstall them, or factory reset the phone after the update if it doesn't perform very well after updates. I'd advice making a backup of all photos, videos and music on a PC, then sync the contacts to Google, and then use Helium to backup messages and app data.

3. No. The phone has to be connected so that Kies downloads the correct firmware for it.

HI,
I have updated my phone to 4.2.2 and it seems to be working fine, but I have a few concerns here..
1. One handed operation for keyboard doesn't seem to be working, but it works on number dial pad
2. When the lock screen is secured with PIN the quick access icon doesnt show up

Can I have someone answer for my concerns..
Adding one more thing, I got an update of about 17mb yesterday and after the update any calls on SIM 1 rings teh default ringtone and not the ringtone that us selected. SIM 2 works fine but its just with SIM 1...

Please someone answer my questions...

See my post here post #31 :) BTW updating via OTA is probably the best way to go though there are other opinions on this. I have updated done many Android phones in this way & there have been no problems & if there are they are v minor like mentioned in post @31 in the link I have mentioned above but that could even happen w/o an update :)
