Field trip app builder for university students

Hi everyone,

I am a graduate student currently working as a research assistant. My professors and I are looking for an app builder that will allow us to construct a full field trip for university students. We do not have the budget to create a full new app and we're not programmers, so we're looking for something (hopefully Open-Sourced) that can suit our needs.

We need:
- Included GPS tracker
- Map download for offline use
- "Stations" or "Stages" that we can edit with text and photo or audio. Students ought to follow the instructions once they reach the station. The station has its coordinates and shows on the map
- Students should be able to take notes or pictures or audio log at each stations in order to answer questions
- Some sort of protection (for university use only)
- Application should have updates and/or troubleshooting procedure since we do not plan on hiring a programmer for this project.
- available for Android

I've done a bunch of research and fell upon 2 promising apps:

FreshAIR: the app allows you to create a game (they call it a "reality") where you have to move in the real world in order to fulfill a quest. I like it because you decide where to put the item of interest (stations) and add instructions there (text, picture, etc.). It can be used offline by downloading the reality in the first place. The only cons is that note taking is not included on the user end and the app is not free (can go up to several hundreds of dollars per month)

ARIS games: really interresting open-sourced project that fulfill most of our requirements. Only it is only available on iOS and requires an internet connection to play.

Other than that there is a bunch of teambuilding app (treasure hunting style) that also fulfill most of our requirements, but they usually are temporary and quite expensive (they usually build the app for you).

So this is my situation!

Any suggestions?! Thanks a lot

Hey, thanks a lot lunatic59!

The MIT app builder seems pretty promising. Only default is that we would have to build a different app for each class that we plan to make. The program does not seem to be that complicated, but might be just a bit hard for a simple teacher with no programming skills.

Still looking out for something, but thanks again!! :)
