Help File System Mounting on the 2012 N7

This may be off topic, but it's driving me nuts. I apologize, but I figured the fols here would know the answer:
I've used Droid Razr/Motorola for the past 2 years and am able to connect via USB to my Win7/64 bit system with ABSOLUTE EASE.

I am dumbfounded because I cant do that with the N7 2012. Why can't I view NEXUS files/directories on my PC?

When I connect the USB- I only see DCIM and Camera, only if I ore-selected Camera MTP!
If I selected media Device which is the default, I see nothing in PC File Manager. UGH!
This is very disappointing because I'd really like to see files on the PC, because typing and moving and renaming is so much easier on a PC rather than a tablet.

Yes, I know I can see files using Android File explorer, etc. But not having ability to see files is driving me nuts. I can see no reason why a$2. USB allows me to see files, but this tablet won't?

I am preparing to root my phone, as I did the Razr, and wanted to back up files using Helium (old Carbon), until I get it rooted. Once rooted I can use my paid for Titanium Pro.' ---

So, where the devil will my backups be stored? How can I move them back and for the to PC, Cloud, tablet etc? Going back and forth between tablet and PC is odd to say the least.

I thought Nexus was the bomb for allowing users to totally manage their devices. Guess u have to have tiny fingers, great eyes, and LOTS OF Patience! Some of which I had, but am quickly losing...

Any help or comments is very much appreciated. If I am in the wrong forum, point the way and I will obey:-)

To me, it seems like your device has PTP enabled rather than MTP for your usb connection. Go into your device settings, then storage. tap the options (3 vertical dots in the upper right hand corner) and tap USB computer connection. If it is on PTP, change it to MTP and that should make it a lot better.

If you are using Windows XP you must install Windows Media player 11.

Once you have it installed your XP system will be able to see the Nexus as a MTP device and you will be able to browse its files.

If you are using Vista, 7, or 8 MTP drivers should be in place but needing to be scrubbed of Nexus device ids, post back if that is the case.

Wugs toolkit will backup and restore for you. It will also walk you through the proper way to install drivers so the tab and PC can see each other correctly.

You beat me to it - that's exactly what I was going to suggest :-)

Follow the instructions exactly, in particular after removing any existing conflicting drivers take care to connect the first time with debugging disabled - and in MTP mode - to allow Windows to install the correct driver that will show the device in explorer. If it installs the debug driver(s) first it appears not to detect the lack of normal MTP driver later, so it never shows in Explorer. Why it behaves this way is anyone's guess; I just mentally sigh and think "Windows is like that..." :-(

If you follow the instructions precisely the universal drivers will work fine in Win7/x64, that's what I also use when I must although I use Linux for 99% of my everyday stuff. The Nexus 7 showed up in Nautilus automagically, I had no need to meddle with drivers as I did with Windows 7.

I am having the same problem. The computer will only see it when PTP is selected, it will not see a thing when MTP is selected. I followed wugs driver configuration to a T but I still get nothing. If I have MTP selected wugs tells me "ADB device not found" if I switch to PTP then it will run the driver test and pass.

Note: this all happened after a failed OTA of 4.4. I used wugs and 4.4 from google to get the tablet back up and running after the fail. Before this I had no issues with USB conections.

You must remove existing drivers first, just uninstalling is not sufficient. The toolkit provides the tools and instructions to delete the drivers before reinstalling, but you need to follow the instructions exactly - no shortcuts.

The symptoms you describe fit exactly with the behaviour I saw on Win7 and can't be fixed (at least I couldn't fix it) without deleting existing drivers and reinstalling from scratch in the exact sequence described in the wugs toolkit, paying particular attention to the debug setting (off!) for the first connection after installing the drivers if you want MTP to work in Explorer.

Yeah it ended up being one of the drivers from my asus transformer that was causing my problem. Got it all sorted out now.
