filter emails sent to phone

I am considering purchasing the motorola droid (I am a verizon customer) and was wondering about email filtering.

I currently have a blackberry and one of the features I take full advantage of is selecting which folders are available on my blackberry. I am on many different email distribution lists and have them filtered to different folders within outlook/exchange.

Is there a way to select only certain folders to be synched/sent to the phone instead of all folders?

As far as Gmail is concerned, I only get alerted to messages in my Inbox. I have several filters that have messages skip the Inbox and have a label applied, and I don't get alerted to these messages on my Droid.

I don't know what functionality there is with regard to non-Gmail mailboxes.

Thanks for that. I did mean to mention that this would be for exchange server.
