Thrilled to discover a new app while browsing today: Calendar in Status Bar. It's a little square showing, eg, Thu 25. Plus, you can configure it to open your preferred Calendar app when you tap via the notifications drawer.
There's an 8-day trial version. Since it runs smooth (Droid) and does exactly what I want, I purchased quickly. $1.12.
(Can't search from app I'm using to post, but didn't see this in today's title list of "apps" threads. Apology if it has already been covered.)
