Fingerprint/PIN

I have my fingerprint set to enter my phone, but I've noticed that every now and then I'm asked to enter my pin number, is this normal?

It is normal in either of two scenarios:
1) You have restarted the phone or,
2) You have made 3 or 4 attempts and it is still unable to correctly read your fingerprint.

Silly me... I'm used to swiping my finger on my laptop's biometric reader - and was trying to swipe the Note 7's home button! Found out (a lot later than I should have) that you don't swipe it... you PLACE your finger on it. Oh well, live & learn...

I know about those 2 scenarios, but what I'm experiencing is similar to #1, but instead of a message saying "You're phone has restarted please enter your pin" I would simply get the keypad to enter my pin with no messages. This usually occurs either when I wave my hand close to the phone to wake or by pressing the power button to turn on the phone.
