Firefox fiasco

Rgarner

Android Expert
Today Firefox worked fine in the morning. When I came back to it in the afternoon, it would't stop crashing. I finally deleted it and had to sideload Firefox Focus. Overall it seems to work better but I apparently can't have tabs. Also, when I leave a website and go back, it's as if I've never been there and I have to start from scratch. How do I fix this? The almost worthless phone I'm using is a ZTE Fanfare 2 with a measly 8 gb. The SD card is 32 gb but seemingly useless for anything besides photos and videos. No, I can't afford another one and have no computer access.

Firefox Focus is only for privacy, like for sites that you don't want anyone else know you go to, so it deletes all data when closing the app.

As for your Firefox crashing, I seem to have problems with mine when I have a lot of tabs open, and on older phones or phones with low ram I have problems when I have other apps open.

Yeah, thanks, I tried shutting down other apps but it didn't seem to help, and I couldn't keep the old Firefox open long enough to shut any tabs. There are no tabs in Focus? I can't even stay logged into Android Forums. Is there another "light" version of Firefox that's more similar to the regular one and not in beta?

Nope, the only other Firefox apps on Goggle Play are Firefox beta (where they allow users to test the upcoming update before they release it to the normal app) and Firefox Nightly(which is for developers and still is in beta.) You could try your luck with one of those two. Firefox beta shouldn't be too much different than the normal app, just might be a bit more buggy. So I would start with that.

Regarding Firefox constantly crashing go back into your Application manager, find the Firefox app in the listing and open it. Tap the 'Force stop' button, then the 'Clear cache' button. Then start up Firefox again and see if it's working better again. If it still crashes, do the above again but instead of 'Clear cache' tap the 'Clear data' button instead. By using 'Clear data' that does wipe all its settings and things so when you start up Firefox again, you'll need to go back into its Settings menu and re-do any changes you had previously made.
(When you had previously deleted it, if you didn't do 'Clear data' before 'Uninstall' that just removed the app itself. You need to 'Clear data' to remove it completely. A lot of apps when you just use 'Uninstall' leave behind their settings and configuration data so if should re-install that app later it just picks up it's original settings/config.)

If I backed up the original to SD, is it safe to do that? Can I restore from SD? I don't want to lose any data, settings, etc.

If you need to save your Firefox bookmarks there are apps for that:
https://tunesgo.wondershare.com/android/backup-android-bookmarks.html
but if you also use Firefox on a computer or other mobile devices maybe think about implementing Firefox's 'Sync' so things like your bookmarks are kept online.

Thanks, those sound good. Is the backup and restore included on the phone good for that? It's from ZTE. if I could use that then I wouldn't have to download anything.

The Backup and Restore in your Settings apparently is centered on Google apps and settings, excluding third-party apps (such as Firefox) and important things like personal data (i.e. photo and music libraries, etc.) It really needs better documentation and more fitting name since it does imply that sense of being able to just back up your phone but in reality just covers some limited items. To be fair, with so many manufacturers and carriers branding their phones in different ways, creating a universal backup and restore app for Android devices can't be an easy endeavor. Apple can get away with this using iCloud and/or iTunes but it has a pretty tight control over both the hardware and OS. For Android, it's more convoluted and we need to rely on miscellaneous, third-party solutions.

Well, I just downloaded Bookmark Sort and Backup in apk form. There is a black or dark gray screen with two circled arrows, one up and one down, but nothing else. What do I do now?

The app's screen caps in its page in the Play Store show an extended options menu, I'd assume it's accessible by using the menu button on your phone:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...bookmarks&hl=en&rdid=com.happydroid.bookmarks
But I am curious as to why you used an apk instead of just installing it from the Play Store. Side-loading apps is generally a riskier way to install apps, depending on just where you downloaded it from there's a question of whether it is or isn't even that app.

I sideloaded because this crappy phone doesn't have enough storage for me to be able to go the regular route. It's a ZTE Fanfare 2 with only 8 gb, and although the SD card has 32, it's apparently good for only photos and videos. I've already unloaded almost everything I can. The rest is pretty much system stuff and/or what I can't get rid of, such as Google Hangouts and TalkBack. What is this magical menu button of which you speak?

Do you mean the app drawer or the thing that shows which screens are open? If it isn't one of those then I don't know what. How can I post a screenshot to show you what I mean? It's just a black screen with an up arrow at the bottom on one side and a down arrow on the other. It doesn't show any bookmarks at all. By the way, almost all of this thread I have posted with Firefox Focus because real Firefox almost always crashes or doesn't even open. Sometimes Focus crashes, too. It would be great if I could do some kind of fundraiser to pay for a new phone, ha ha.

Did you try anything posted previously about actually fixing Firefox so it's working again? And nothing I did post refers to Firefox Focus.

I sideloaded Bookmark Sort and Backup to do that, but as I said it's just those arrows on a black screen. I can't get real Firefox to work at all, photos keep crashing, and Gmail lies that it's getting messages but does nothing of the kind. I'm just going to have to save up for a new phone, probably a Coolpad Canvas, even though I could do without the Chinese or any other spyware.

Photos are finally working, but slowly. Everything else is about the same. At least Focus has a nice color combo. Should I just get rid of the real one until I can get a better phone?
