Fix lamp short circuit

Start by replacing the bulb to make sure it isn't that.
If the bulb is OK, disassemble the the recepticle where the bulb sits and make sure the wires are securely seated and the insulation is in tact. Make sure any bare wires aren't touching each other. If you see any blackening or charring, then replace the entire cord. They are pretty cheap at any Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

Slight correction, if I may? Start by replacing the bulb then unplugging the lamp to do the rest.
I wrote it that way first, then went back and added the part about replacing the bulb. I figured, how else would you know if that's the problem? (Duh! You'd try it in a different lamp.)Technically, if it possibly has a short, I'd unplug it before even changing the bulb. If there is a short or loose wire and it's up in the socket, that could end up really kind of ruining your day. I mean you're supposed to get a charge out of life, but not like that.
Always check the lowest cost replacement unit first.
I was hoping you'd replace the cord and tell us how you did it.

OT: I prefer screw tops @rootabaga. 
Sometimes it's not the bulb loosening but the contact at the bottom of the socket has lost it's spring like ability over time. Unplugging the lamp, unscrewing the bulb, and a gentle tug on the bottom contact so that it will continuously make contact with the bulb when replaced is the answer.
