WARNING!!!!! YOU NEED A ROOTED DEVICE TO DO THIS!!! ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT ROM AND APPS BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS FIX!!!! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BRICKED DEVICES
ok, for those of you with entry level devices or even higher end tablets/smartphones running any incarnation of Android beyond version 2.1, who get that annoying sync-killing 'low disk space--phone storage space is running low' with likely plenty left (the factory threshold is set at 20-25MB--which is plenty for SMS messages and a few emails but the notification kills sync so you never get them) and want to keep your apps, here's a fix. you need to be rooted first
Required tools
1. Rooted phone/tablet running at least version 2.3 Android and up
2. SQLite editor ($2.99 from Google Play Store)
Instructions:
1. BACKUP YOUR ROM! USE ANY CUSTOM RECOVERY TOOL AND REBOOT
2. Install and run SQLite editor. browse to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
open the file. tap 'secure' and hold down the finger anywhere and select 'new record' from the menu which comes up.
name the record 'sys_storage_threshold_percentage' (without quotes) and give it a '5' for value.
save, exit, and reboot the device. keep in mind this won't totally get rid of the warning, but it reduces the threshold to a value unlikely to be seen until you are so low that apps won't even install. in which case you should free space or find a way to transfer stuff to SD card
