Fix torn lino or vinyl floor

Rgarner

The edge is ripped up right near the door. Probably it will just get worse if it isn't repaired. What would work? Is there a special kind of adhesive?

I know there are different types of epoxy, and different prices. Which should I get? Also, since I've never used it, what should I find out before I start?

Ace would probably be fine but I ended up at Home Depot. It's a good thing I asked because what I was looking at would probably not have cut it. I am (I hope) enclosing pictures of the stuff and what I am planning to fix with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You got the right glue, but you need some better prep. Clean of and scrape down as much of the glue on the floor and on the back of the lino, then sweep / vacuum up any other dust, dirt, and debris. You may need to pull back more of the lino and re-glue a larger area for it to work.

It appears you have a good trowel for application (if as the photo implies you already tried once). Apply the glue to the floor and let it set up for a few minutes (it's been about 25 years since I did flooring, but it think its like 5-15 minutes). You will notice the glue turn from the light beige to a slightly browner shade, almost like white bread in a toaster.

When it darkens a bit put the lino back into the glue and weight it down.

You are going to have to give the glue some help to fight that curl, so I would leave the weight on at least 24 hours. Make sure the weight is evenly applied across all of the glued area. Something flat and heavy like books with weight on top or cinder blocks. You need to make good contact between the lino and the floor.

Unfortunately, I may not have access to a trowel at the moment. It is a sheet, not separate tiles. I'll give it a shot as soon as I can. I guess I wasn't expecting quite that much prep work. By the way, let's eschew bombastic ponderosity while we're at it.

No can do...I'm lucky to get this far. I just hope following Unforgiven's excellent advice will do it. I also hope I never have to go through this again.

Just some old experience, but I hope it helps.

I hope it works out OK, but your pics make it look like the flooring may be getting pretty old and brittle. And being (if I see your pics right) and exterior door it probably is getting some moisture, so you may be working on a short term fix. :(

I hope not, because I can't afford anything else. Oh well, at least I'm indoors, with a crappy floor. Supercat strikes again.
