Fixed income looking @ a Pixel 1

Hi! IS IT EVEN WORTH IT TO BUY A PIXEL 1 AT THIS POINT?

I am on a fixed income. I am wondering how Google is w/ updates/longevity/usage of the Pixel 1 (and 2). I know pixel 3 is almost here.
I "divorced" Apple when my iPhone 4 became useless bc it couldn't update. (Apple will not hold ME hostage.) This makes me wary.

I was wondering bc my budget is in the Pixel 1 range. THANKS!

Aren't all phone models sort of in this category? The manufacturers only update and support them for so long and then kaput? Planned obsolescence?

The Pixel will get an update to Android P later this year, and Google has guaranteed security updates until October 2019.

After that I haven't heard anything set in stone.

My Nexus 5x was still powering along beautifully until I dropped it into a stream, in late March 2019, three and 1/2 years old.
I replaced it with a pixel. It's fine so far, I am still deleting apps and customizing it. $145 is much nicer than 650+
