forced upgrade?

On Sunday I got a message in my notifications bar that T-Mobile was providing a software upgrade for my SGS. When I clicked on the notice, offered me the option to do the upgrade or delay it. I don't recall an option to dismiss or opt out!

So I did the OTA upgrade to "2.1 upgrade 1" with great trepidation.
It appears that it has worked OK and I haven't yet encountered a problem.

Now does anybody know what this upgrade offered, and if there was some way to opt out that I didn't pick up on?

I think it's a bit much just to foist something like this on a consumer without even identifying what the upgrade is for. I couldn't tell from the notificatoion whether this was a system upgrade or some app that was upgrading. Kinda makes one feel a bit helpless.
 
I work in IT and I sympathize with not giving details or an option to opt out of updates. The average end user will opt out of an update that explicitly states it is there to prevent the PC from exploding in their face, or one that will turn their floppy drive into an endless cash dispenser. Every year when we do a security audit I end up having to manually run the tool on several machines because the "don't close this!" window gets closed by so many people that cancel everything that looks even vaguely technical. I kid you not, I once had somebody call about an error message - that they had immediately closed without reading of course - that ended up being a "printer out of paper" warning.

The same people that will later complain loudly about their phone's phantom data use, inaccurate GPS, etc, are the same people that repeatedly cancelled the update fixing those issues.
 
Thanks for your reply. I hadn't considered it from the IT perspective, but still believe we're a democratic country and that each consumer ought to have the option of an informed decision. This experience was far too autocratic for my taste. Even if the upgrade is necessary and advisable, the consumer ought to know what is being done to him/her. I had no idea what this was and, other than that it's a Tmo update, still don't.
Not a happy camper over this one. Tmo may be ramping its culture up to match the unilateral arrogance of AT&T. I sure hope not!!
 
It's also end of life. I don't intend to upgrade my XP laptop to 7. I will simply wait until security gets funky and switch to Linux. So that means that some new stuff, unless they tell me, could bugger the computer. The same goes for the phone. We've got a Nokia 6085 on the account. ( there is no upgrade, thanks), but the user would sure fight any upgrade. He simply likes the phone the way it is and won't change until the phone dies.
Maybe if you work for a business with many phones you can force it, but most of us are single consumers and want the information. You have a website - put the system requirements there!
