Forward Direct Connect From Nextel to Android Phone?

takirb

Android Enthusiast
Is there currently a way to do this? I have a Nextel for work on the Sprint network, as well as my personal LTEvo on the Sprint network. I assume i can simply forward the actual phone number from my work cell to my personal cell, but Direct Connect is the primary means of communication on my work cell. Any way to forward that over to my LTEvo as well?

forward what? the direct connect feature?

if that is your answer, no you cant do that to the evo. the ecvo is not a legacy PTT/direct connect device. Sprint are rolling out their updated PTT for its nextel users, so you would have to get a PTT enabled handset to use PTT.

perhaps I am missing your question entirely..? :o

Well, i'm not sure exactly what "Direct Connect" is other than a simple PTT capability of the phone. Wasn't sure if forwarding the phone line to my Evo along with running an app that i haven't heard of (or some other automagical way unknown to me) would allow me to take Direct Connect calls or pages from my Evo. I'm tired of carrying around 2 phones everyday - this Nextel/Direct Connect "Brick" phone as we call them, and my personal cell. Some of our management staff use Blackberry's with Direct Connect, and others use iPhones w/o Direct Connect but i was told that something was changing soon to allow the iPhone users of our staff Direct Connect/PTT function. Not sure if that relates to a Sprint network change or not..

Sprint confirms Direct Connect Now, will offer Push-to-Talk services via smartphone app -- Engadget

It will be fully rolled out with Network Vision I'm guessing. It is already on some PTT handsets and the Samsung Transformer Ultra.

It may not work with ALL Sprint Android phones (handset will have to support the correct radio frequencies after all), but you should be able to "ditch the brick" at some point or another for a slimmer style "SmartPhone".

"Interoperability with Nextel Direct Connect"

Considering that Sprint is flipping the Nextel switch to the off position (one year from today) this may be a way to convince current Nextel customers to stay with Sprint when their handsets go silent.

I've got over 60 Nextel handsets at work that cost us $20 a month per handset including taxes (unlimited PTT only, no cellular) and up until just recently no other carrier has even been in the ballpark. But Verizon paid me a visit a couple weeks ago and said they'd match it.
