Free navigation?

You just moved from Sprint, right? I though I saw you post elsewhere, maybe the Razr forum. Anyway, if you are familiar with navigating with google's navigator, then VZW does not charge extra for that. There will be a chunk of Bloat on your phone when you get it, one of these apps will be VZNavigator which they do charge you to use.

I hope this helps.:)

I use Google Maps on Sprint. Are you saying that's OK? I ask because a Sprint rep wanted to "warn" me about other carriers potentially charging for navigation services... After I told him I would be opting out... Of course.

Google maps is free on Verizon also...the VZ navigator app is a Verizon app that may be included in some phones, you would have to pay to use it

Yes, that is what I meant. I would imagine that when you choose navigate or get route (I can't remember the terminology) in Google Maps that it will ask you which nav app to use. Make sure you use the one that just says Navigation and has a Blue arrow pointing up. You may even need to download it free from the market as I imagine VZW will try to steer you to their paid offering. The only VZW software I use is MyVZW which allows me to manage my account.

I haven't activated a new Bloated VZW device (my GNex came bloat free) in a couple of years so it may have changed.

Just another quick thought, you are a new VZW customer, so I'm guessing you are one a tiered plan. Both Google Navigation and VZNavigator use data from your plan.

Can I not just use GPS and turn data off?

I believe that the maps are loaded through data, though a certain amount can be cached in GMaps. I have unlimited (grandfathered plan) so I haven't actually tried having data off. I'll do this though. I have to leave hear in a few minutes, and have to run some errands, I'll be home around 5:30. I'll turn on navigation and see how much data it actually uses to see if it is even an issue.

Thanks. I don't use navigation THAT much, but I'd like to not have to stress about data limits when doing so too much.

I just drove a 15 mile route and made it reroute 5 times. Data usage was 615k so you should have no worries using nav

Thanks alot. Does it matter whether or not you're in a bad signal area? I would assume a k of data holds the same value regardless of how fast you receive it.

This is correct, the amount of data won't change for the app, just the time it takes to get that same amount of data.

1k of data is 1k of data no matter how fast you receive it.

Also to say again, VZ Navigator runs $9.99/month I beleive, but Google Navigator (which is on all Android phones I think) is free to use and integrates with Google maps. I use it all the time.

There are also apps in the Market that store the maps locally, so once you've downloaded them (hopefully via Wifi) you don't need a data connection. CoPilot and NDrive are two of the paid apps, and NavFree is free.

What they said is correct, so I wouldn't worry about data usage in regards to navigation.

Since this I till kind of on topic, will I get full speeds while using my 4 gigs of data, or will Verizon throttle me at all? I would assume no since they would probably like me to go over my cap.

Verizon's throttling policy is very benign. It is tower specific only for towers that are busy. It works something like this. If you have been previously flagged as a heavy data user (I'm not sure of the criteria) and you are using high bandwidth on a tower that is busy at the time you are using it, you will be slowed down only enough to allow reasonable throughput for other users using that tower. I hope that makes sense.

It makes sense and doesn't at the same time. If I'm paying for data that isn't unlimited, I should be able to use the entire 4 gigs from one tower in one hour of I wanted. Oh well, I'm looking forward to the better speeds over Sprint.

If you are on a tiered plan you should not be throttled at all, also if you are on 4G you shouldn't be throttled on an unlimited plan.

Actually I think it is more of a network management thing on VZW. Their policy is more along the lines of making sure that all users are getting what they paid for, reasonable access speeds to data. It doesn't matter how much bandwidth you use or if you are unlimited or tiered. BC it is tower / usage specific I imagine that many folks have been "throttled" without noticing it as it is applied only when the tower is busy and does not run to the end of a billing cycle.

On my Evo 3D, there is an option to turn off data when it's not being used or if the the screen is off. Is there an option like this for the RAZR?

Well you also have to remember that your sharing that tower with many other paying customers as well. They want to make sure everyone gets their fair share of bandwidth (slow data is better than no data). Its a pretty common practice in any sort of network. It would be pretty ridiculous to give all their bandwidth to one person on the basis of "they were there first".

I understand. That's why I said it makes sense but doesn't at the same time.

Again if you are on a tiered plan you will not be throttled. Vzw only throttles unlimited 3G customers the block c provisions prevent throttling of LTE and the network optimization clause doesn't apply to tiered plans

When you have an unlimited data package from Verizon, you do have unlimited data. What you don't have is unlimited data at necessarily the fastast speed possible.

He recently moved over from sprint so he is stuck with a tiered package which in this case could be better...
