Free Texting app to communicate with UK friends??

Hi Everyone. I have spent my morning searching for this and havent found anything promising yet.

Basically i have a UK friend that I would like to be able to text with for free or VERY low cost. We communicate primarily through MSN messenger but would like the ability to send important messages via text when we are out and away from the computers. I have the Droid Eris, but he has an older Nokia phone. My current provider is Verizon which charges me $0.25 per text sent and $0.20 per text received from the UK. Can anyone help me with this. I have discovered TextPlus, but it says it only works with 10 digit US and Can numbers. Is there a program that can assign him a 10 digit us number? Is this something that can be accomplished through Skype? am i reaching for something that doesnt exist? Im not highly technical, but can follow simple directions if anyone is willing to help me out.

Thanks in advance,
Pamela

I don't know about a texting for free program.. but why not just install an App like Nimbuzz or something that you can sign into MSN with and send a message that way?

It can only supply American numbers (hence why I mentioned it) but I heard it doesn't need to be used with an American IP.

Have you tried using an invite? I am in the UK and was able to get an invitation and Google did not allow me to use it because UK is not supported.

Why not have your friend download and install eBuddy for his Nokia and you do the same for your Android phone. That would allow both of you to chat back and forth until you got bored... providing you had a data connection (3G or WiFi). At the last resort you could move to the US and enjoy all the technological benefits from that great nation :)
