Freighter, Steamer, or Cargo Ship, Anyone?

OK, it aint the QE2 . . . but has anyone here ever booked passage on a Freighter, Steamer, or Cargo Ship?

Looked into it last year out of curiosity (and my boyfriend is terrified of flying). No less cheaper than flying, unless you plan on staying on the boat for a good amount of time. Most prices included sharing meals with the crew, a fairly good sized room compared to cheap passage on a luxury liner of equiv. or lesser price, etc. I seem to remember that such a voyage would've taken a but too long to do something transatlantic than the 2 weeks we had originally planned on. We are both back in school after losing our jobs, so maybe we'll consider it over a semester in the future. Would love to hear about someone's experiences.
