Hi,

My name's Wayne, I'm in my early 30s from the UK.

I've got a Wildfire S on the Orange network so have a lot of bloatware on the phone that I wouldn't mind getting rid of.

Having a read through a lot of the threads on here before I try to root the phone, I want to improve my phone not blow it up.

I look forward to asking newbie questions and learning new and scary things.

Hello and welcome to the forums Wayne - thanks for joining!

You might like to check out HTC Wildfire S - Android Forums - there is plenty of info in there from other Wildfire S users which should be useful.

If you need any help navigating the forums, then feel free to hit one of us guides up!!

Hope you like what you see and good luck, if you do device to root!!

Hi Wayne and welcome to Android Forums

Let me offer a word of caution. Many apps provide services for other parts of the OS and if you remove them, you can disable certain features or make your phone unusable. More importantly, system apps are not easily restorable like simply installing an .apk file. And once deleted, even a factory reset will not recover them. You will have to locate and flash a stock rom image to get them back. If you plan on rooting and deleting those apps, please check back in your device forum first before you do anything so we can make sure it's safe for you to delete those without any negative impact to your phone.

It's mainly the Orange corporate bloatware I want to get rid of, I'm constantly having to clear cache and I've stopped downloading apps as it seems to be 50/50 whether I can move them to the SD card once they've installed.

The phone is constantly flashing up requests to update apps like Orange Wednesdays, Peep, Facebook and the other stuff that I don't use but can't completely delete off. I got rid of some bits and pieces but there was an update recently that's put all of them and more back on.

I'm going to take my time on this, read through some of the threads and stickies in the Wildfire S forum before I do anything. I just want to take control of the phone as I would my laptop, install the applications I use and delete the ones I don't use and maybe improve the phones performance (touch screen response is sluggish and the phone seems to struggle to do anything quickly), there seems to be a lot of stuff running that the app killer is having to constantly stop.

I think I'd better take your advice and find out if there is a stock rom available for the Orange Wildfire S before I do anything. I have managed to update the phone from S-ON to S-OFF without any problems so it's starting well.

One of the most important threads you can read right now is http://androidforums.com/android-applications/335110-why-you-dont-need-task-killer.html.

That will help your phone immeasurably.

Just WOW, how many different ways do you have to explain something to someone before he stops and thinks about it. Having read that I removed the AppKiller I was using and I approve the well thought out and researched posts by many members.

And so my education begins again (I hope there's no homework).

You might want to check out the section on "Pop Quiz Fridays" in the forum guidelines. ;)

As for the carrier apps. The safest way to go is to start by rooting your phone. You then can use Titanium Backup to freeze the apps in question so that they never run. This method allows you to unfreeze and app if you discover it was providing an important service to the phone, which, most likely, the facebook app does, even though you may never use it. Once you have had your phone running for a while with a frozen app and you see not negatives, then it would be safe to delete permanently. I would highly recommend a full nandroid backup before freezing or removing anything just in case something goes wrong. That way you don't have to hassle with locating and flashing a stock rom and then reinstalling and configuring everything again.
