Galaxy Note II - nothing on Kies works.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums!
You should be able to hook the Note 2 up to a windows pc and go into Computer and see the device in there and browse the sdcard and internal memory without issues. You might need the drivers for this, go here Download Center: Download Software, Firmware, Drivers & Manuals | Samsung select cell phones and select your model, select downloads tab and you should see your driver pack to download. Also you will need to be in mass storage mode on the phone itself. When you plug into your pc you should see a usb icon at the top of the screen, pull down on the screen to get the overlay menu and select USB icon, it might say connected as a media device. Make sure MTP is selected, this is your "mass storage" mode.

Thanks for the response. I had this installed.
phone SGH-T889 - both list box options have been downloaded and tried on 2 different PC each running Windows 7 (fully updated with patches and .NET versions).
Neither work with the Galaxy Note II.
My old android phone connected just fine this way.
So, I just tried a different cable (than what worked on my old android) and sure enough the USB icon popped up! I have spent hours on this.
The MTP is checked. my computer said "usb driver didn't correctly connect"
However the SGH-T889 Portable Media Player did show up on My Computer.
WoHoo! got my photos to share!!
The other USB cable worked perfect for my last android and for other devices.
Would not have expected that!
I have a strong background in electronics, would not have expected that.
OK, please stand buy, I will try Kies next.

Naturally, Kies works like it should! If only Kies had a test for cables, it would have saved hours.
First thing first, I made an entire backup.
Kies Firmware Question:
The Firmware Information shows the current firmware version is the same as the latest firmware version. Does kies check or is there a refresh/download step necessary?

Guess I will go outside now and join my friend in my mountain hot springs.

Glad to hear you got this working. I have only used Kies a couple times but I believe when you connect your device it will check for updates then present you with any updates available for your device. I normally do the OTA updates instead of Kies. Thanks for joining I hope you find the forums very informative!
