From iPhone to Android - where's my "badge numbers"?

Im a recent new Andriod user (couple of days), moving from an iPhone.

One thing im lacking is a unread badge number displaying for my apps (mailwise, messeages, facebook etc.).

Isnt this build into the system, or do i need to get a seperate app for that?

Im currently using the Nova Launcher.

Badge notifications are a paid upgrade for Nova Launcher, amongst other enhancements.

Ditto with Apex Launcher, which I use. It also allows configurable badge shape, size, color, and position, AWA allowing selection of which app for which purpose (in the event you have more than one).
