frustrated newb...help root huawei ascend on 2.2.2

so I've been trying to rooot my phone for hours now.
Gingerbreak, as read in several threads is useless. how the hell does it work on the youtube videos?!
Trying to get superoneclick to work and it won't cooperate. I open it on my windows Xp, click root, and it has a problem.

Someone help.
I want to root and tether.
Total newb here. and the amount of redundant threads in this forum is just sending me in circles.
to much old stuff with outdated links or programs.
HELP!!!

actually my main concern is tethering so I can link up my laptop for internet when I'm in a pinch and absolutely need it.

Rooting is just something I wanted to try out so I can use some different roms and such.
