Fsvorite linux shell (ubuntu)

Id love to be open for a discussion on what is your favorite shell for ubuntu

Right now im using xfce ive tried out gnome, unity, and fiddled around with compiz but it overheats my crappy 3 year old laptop. Suggestions welcone.

My favourite is unity. Lxde is the most lightweight I've found that I can mimick unity in

I can't really get along with unity, heh. I find lightweight shells easier on the CPU all I have is this crummy dual core I mean unity looks nice but for me without good hardware acceleration even gnome sometimes wants to act up.

I will certainly give it a shot when I have spare time. (That means one o clock in the morning. xD) I find my adventures with Linux to be quite time consuming yet very satisfying.

Does the shell you speak of allow shell extensions as well?

*runs off spilling coffee everywhere*

You got a screenshot or two hanging around?

Linux Terminology 101:
You're talking about the Desktop Environment (DE), the Shell, usually BASH (Bourne Again SHell) is what you use in a terminal (Command line in Windows-Speak).
Yes, LXDE (Lighweight X Desktop Environment is fast on lower-spec computers and very customizable. With the extra libraries stuff written for Gnome or KDE will live quite happily in an LXDE environment. If you want to try really lightweight De's look at Openbox or Fluxbox. PCLinuxOS and CrunchBang both have Openbox flavours, give it a try, it needs a bit more config work than LXDE but it's worth it in terms of speed on older kit.

The other lightweight DE that you might want to look at is XFCE, also very tweakable and stable. try Xubuntu for this one.

I just finished installing a fresh 12.10 Studio install and I am working on getting everything in the right place(including my terminology xD) i run xfce now like i said since i have an older machine its best to use things that don't hog the heck out of the cpu.

So:

IDE (GUI)
Shell (Terminal)
Window Manager (Compiz, funny effects that I don't really need)

I dug this up for reference, it contains instructions for installing some of the basic Desktop Environments.

You NEED a window manager. its what manages how the windows display and act. Even if you don't want to configure it, it must be present.

Favorite shell: zsh
Favorite desktop environment: Gnome + Openbox (never liked Metacity)

<opinion>As far as Unity, I feel it's great on a touch screen device but has no place on a desktop computer</opinion>

To me a 'shell' is quite different from a 'desktop environment' or 'window manager' which seem to be what you're referring to. My favorite SHELL is bash. My favorite desktop environment is KDE, which is what I use.

Same here. My favourite DE is KDE, that's what I use all the time.

Favorite shell: Bash
Favorite DE: I'm torn between KDE and GNOME. Other than those and Unity, I haven't really tried anything else

I'm a BASH convert, but before that I was a CSH fan of many years.

KDE 3.5 is still my desktop of choice. LXDE for less demanding and/or low resource installs. LXDE makes the most of limited screen resources, BTW.

I started off using Csh also but now use Bash the most. I was a long time Gnome2 user but now have been using Gnome3 & KDE4 but also use Openbox window manager.

Yep, it really is an "each to his own" thing. For me, everything is just where I want it. My only annoyance really is teamviewers poor interaction with the launcher.

Lxde... Tried it, love it. It's very simple and has a world of customization and eye candy for your desktop. I will be posting q screen shot as soon as I get around to removing the virus in my xp install. I need windows for.... A few reasons. :p

Thanks for the wonderful feedback guys. This opens up some fun times. I love to tinker around with it... Just don't ask me to compile anything. XD

My main linux computer is an underpowered netbook, so for me unity is quite a bit sluggish. Though, the last one I tried 12.10 is so much nicer than the first ones I tried. Wouldn't mind trying it out on a full desktop in the future.

That being said I prefer gnome2 and bash... but that's probably because that was what was in use on my first handful of linux installs. :P

I tried gnome on fedora 18 at work yesterday and it wasn't that bad. I still prefer unity but yes its a hog.

TBH, Gnome 3 and Unity are not bad at all. It just take some time getting used to how they work. I've been using G3 on my C2D system, which came with Unity when I bought it refurbished. I used Unity for about a month before switching to G3.

OpenBox is probably my favorite.

Followed by MATE/Gnome2

Then....Cinnamon

Then KDE

Then Gnome 3.x

Unity is at the bottom of the list. Its not BAD, just not my thing.
