It depends on the resolution and aspect resolution you have selected in your camera settings. If you have the highest resolution selected, it captures in a 4:3 ratio, so that's what the viewfinder/preview screen shows you. If you change to one of the 16:9 resolutions instead, the preview screen will change to show a preview in that size, which will fill more of the screen, even though the image itself will be smaller.
