G1 gets pwnd on The Gadget Show

dont think that was quite a fair test. the user wasnt very fluent with any of the phones and really didnt look at all of the features. He ditched the g1 because of no headphone jack and no video? sounds kinda dumb. He should have dropped the storm for no wifi and the same document prob he had with it.

I wouldn't say that.... does show the flaws in camera and how young the software is but doesn't really give the phone a clear comparison..... honestly look at the email part it's never taken me 50 seconds to send a quick email like that and none of the phones had a keyboard only touch screen advantage g1 and in his closing statement he ranked the g1 above blackberry and the iphone above the HTC even though the HTC won the BS testing this guy did...... Looked more like he was sponsored by apple since he had to throw in the little "gadget of the year comment" As for the test it isn't clear if you don't compare EVERY test with EVERY phone.... but that's just my 2 cents.....
 
He does admit that Android needs some time to mature. But once exchange, video, and mobile documents are added theres no looking back.

Its a shame it got knocked out after the first round because the G1 would have gone on to kick ass at writing emails with its full keyboard (I bet it would have been under 30 sec easy). And batterie life is pretty comparable to the iPhone so that would have been a draw.

So once the OS gets some upgrades, and they put a bigger batterie in the thing it willbe the hands down winner.

And lets not forget this is the first Android phone, and the iPhone has been out for years. Put this agains't the first iPhone and see who wins lol.
 
Silly test.

He arbitrarily decides that a lack of a stereo jack and video capabilities eliminates the G1 from the competition??? Hey, the iPhone doesn't have video, why didn't he knock the iPhone out?

Why didn't he pick lack of WiFi as the criteria to eliminate a phone?

The fact is, once Cupcake update arrives, which is supposed to be in January, G1 will not really NEED a 3.5mm jack, as it will have wireless Bluetooth. It'll also (supposedly) be getting video added.

I'm NOT saying G1 should have won this contest, just that they criteria he selected as to what would eliminate one phone or another from the rounds was rather silly.
 
I wonder if any UK folks can tell us how much this show has influence on buying in their opinion. Just curious.

I placed my order the day after the show aired...

I had a WM6 PDA phone, which was getting on my tits for reliability, I have an iPod touch, and I have a crackberry for work.

So far I've not put my G1 down.
 
I love the show and look forward to it every week. They are in love with the iPhone, that's clear for everyone to see. All 4 handsets had flaws and if the tests were done in a different order there would have been a different result. Having all 4 complete every round marked our of 5 woulfd have been even fairer. But hey all reveiws are someone's opinion. It's just how much you trust that opinion.
 
I watch the gadget show all the time as well, but the show is more about entertainment than actual reviewing of gadgets.
their review system is normally completely flawed, they eliminate gadgets for ridiculous reasons and some of their 'tests' have no baring on real world experiences.
I do enjoy it though, but I would never base a purchase decision on their recommendations
 
I always watch this show and they absolutely love Apple on it. I disagree with alot of their reviews as they refuse to accept anything that could be better than apple.

To balance their journalism it's always apple vs xyz though... not just purely a jobsfest. :D

but they always manage to find an apple vs 'test' to do.
 
Well for a few of us first timers, now knowing their bent is like watching The Office and thinking the Boss (Brent or Scott) is really crazy in this reality show, makes it a bit off-putting. Knowing it is scripted tv is a bit difference.

Thanks for letting us know their tests are MEANT to be a bit wacky and biased. Good to see the G1 making the cut. Many other smartphones didn't.
 
I completely agree that they are in love with the iPhone. Not seen the video on the website but in the episode the HTC HD won the contest but, back in the studio, they gave more points to the iPhone. Seems inconsistent to me.

The show in general is good though and I like it. The main thing to remember is that the show gear the 'challenges' so that the favourite product wins. That's why the G1 went out so early, they knew that their beloved iPhone would have been given a run for its money. Anyway, its not going to stop me watching the show or using my G1, I enjoy both.

I ordered the G1 when they showed it about 2 or 3 weeks before the test in the link above, I watch the show all the time but it doesn't usually influence me until I saw Android working

this isn't "revenge", this one was aired a few weeks before the other one and this is the one that convinced me to get the G1 (I ordered it that night), which is why I was surprised that it did so badly in the test a few weeks later vs Storm & iPhone

It's simple really apple fans will accept and use nothing else... it's amazing but I have friends like that... all they own is apple and all they do is try any way they can to put down competition... the easiest way to make apple look good is to ignore and dispose of the true competition early on so they can pretend it doesn't exist when they are surpassed later on...
