G1 USB Charging

Can I use a regular USB cable to charge my G1 cell phone or do I need the proprietary HTC USB cable? Thanks.

You can use a regular USB cable, I have a few PC's at home and a couple at work which I use for charging my G1 as and when I need to. The original cable is lost somewhere in amongst one of them, but they all charge my G1 flawlessly.

I tried this in my car, because my stereo has a USB port. It'll charge for about 5-10 seconds, and then the radio turns off. I dunno why

Quick guess is that the phone is asking for too much voltage and the radio gets scared and shuts itself off, rather than face a blown fuse. Probably a good idea to get your stereo manual out and see what kind of voltage it is capable of putting out. What model stereo are you using?

Here's the stereo I have: Clarion U.S.A. | DB365USB

I'm not really sure where I'd even look to find out voltages and such, and even if I did I still have no clue what to compare that to on the G1 to see if it's causing the problem
