How do i select a ringtone that i have transfered from my laptop to my phone as a ringtone can only select the pre installed ones.

I don't have your phone. On other Android phones the answer to your question is ...

Move the sound file to a folder on your phone called Ringtones
Reboot the phone by powering off and powering on
The ringtone name should then pre present for selection

(Don't put the folder on a removable SD card.)
