Galaxy S II X: Case/Screen Protector required?

I am active, so my phone has to be too. I take it hiking, to the gym, etc. I upgraded from an Optimus One (My first phone), to a Galaxy S II X, and I suspect this one is more fragile.

So, in short, are a case and/or screen protector essential? If so, any recommendations? I don't like hard shell cases, I prefer gel or leather.

If you are that active I would definitely recommend a case. I prefer a TPU case which is some where between a hard plastic and soft rubber. Just Google tpu and your phone and you will get some options.
