Help Galaxy S is screwed! Most apps don't load, can't even do factory reset!

I was using my phone as usual at work, and noticed I couldn't modify an entry in Jorte (calendar app). The phone would produce an error message. Next, the Jorte widget failed to load.

I restarted the phone and was alarmed to see:

The application com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly.

followed immediately by:

The application com.sec.android.app.samsungapps.una has stopped unexpectedly.

Probably half the program icons are missing! Settings>Manage applications shows that every app uses 0.00B!

Even when trying to do a factory reset, I get:

The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly.

Phone will not start up on its own: I get the "waiting dial" icon for 1/2 second, and then nothing. Will only start when plugged into USB.

Rather than the 3G symbol, I get a circle with a slash through it (ie. no service).

What's going on?? Is the memory (internal SD) on my phone corrupted?

How can I determine the state of the internal SD? How can I reformat it, if need be?

I turned off auto sync for starters; no help.

EDIT: it looks like the only apps that still appear on the phone are the ones it came with; icons for all the apps I've downloaded are missing!

EDIT: Clicking the Samsung Apps icon comes up with a dialog "No SIM card or phone is turned off"! (Why would a phone app tell you the phone may be off?!)

Do a factory reset in recovery mode instead. Turn off your phone. Then press power + Volume Up + Home together. Hold them down until the I9000 screen comes up. Wait for about 2 seconds and let go of the power button, then another 2 and let go of the home button. Lastly the volume button.

Yo Snapper ... ya I discovered this after talking to Bell tech support. It worked! Of course I lost all my apps and text msg history though :(

I guess the only good piece of news is I upgraded to Froyo. I'm really concerned the phone is gonna lose its marbles again though ... kinda scary, since my business suffers a lot without phone access.
