Help Galaxy S thinks it's rooted

I896

Lurker
I have an SGH-I896 Samsung Galaxy S with Android 2.1 Eclair and apparently it thinks it's rooted. I wanted to root it to update the Android version, but I didn't know how so I was looking for tutorials. I was checking the build number when I noticed that the kernel number said "2.6.29 root@sep-58 #2". I'm pretty sure that means it's rooted, even though I was never really that good with phones (I'm learning). The phone can't really do things a rooted phone can. I gave it to a friend who is good with phones and rooting, and he started it in this mode (I forgot what it's called) where you see all this DOS-like text and select things with the volume up/down buttons. He checked something, then told me it really is rooted. I swear I did not touch anything that could possibly make the phone rooted or think it's rooted. What's causing this? Thanks.
