Root Galaxy S2 Root

I don't want to clog this forum with a bunch of noob questions that have probably been asked 1000 times before, but I can't find this info (in a way I can understand it).

I was going to attempt rooting my Galaxy S2, but cannot seem to find any information on the build type I have. My phone is as follows:

Model number: SPH-D710

Android version: 4.04

Baseband versions: S: D710.10 S.F127

Kernal version: 3.0.15-1127689 se.infra@SEP-98 #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 27 18:24:35 KST 2012

Build number: IMM761.F127

Hardware version: D710.10

All tutorials I have found identify different specs. I don't want to get in the middle of this and brick my phone, since I don't know enough about it to undo the damage. I guess what I'm asking is this:

Is there any simple step by step instructions that a nitwit like me can follow? Or do you have to study this field in order to root a phone. It seems to me that this is engineering or programming stuff of which I am neither and know nothing about. Can I pay someone to do it for me? Or maybe just to walk me through it step by step?

Lastly, what will I get out of rooting my phone? What will it do that it can't do now? Obviously, I'd like my phone to work faster and perform better if possible. But other than that, I really don't know what rooting accomplishes. It's my understanding that you can take off all the crap that service providers put on it that bogs it down. But I still probably wouldn't know how to get rid of it. Anyway, I'd appreciate any help. Even if it's to tell me not to do it because I'm too dumb. Thanks.
