Galaxy S3 Ram issues :S

Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this; I changed my iphone 4s to a galaxy S3 and much preferring the change

However after 2 days of having the phone I noticed that the RAM was always at 600/750out of 832MB (roughly)

It then starting getting a bit laggy when closing an app back to the home screen it would take 2-3 seconds before the icons would populate. I tried closing all apps and clearing the memory but it didn't make much difference.

I've reset the phone and the issue has gone for now, but my RAM usage is still constantly sitting around 500/600 out of 832MB

Is this normal? looking at other threads alot of people seem to have 1024Mb+ of RAM on their S3, is my phone missing memory :s

Horribly confused :s Any advice would be great.

You shouldn't worry about RAM, and stop clearing memory, that's the reason why the phone is starting to get slower: you clearing memory.

Android works like Linux, not Windows, where the entire RAM is allocated to "prefetch" apps. Window only allows 50% prefetch I think. This means that the RAM is pulling the most used apps so that they take less power and start faster rather than leaving them in the background. When you clear the RAM, you are also clearing the launcher state, which is why the apps take a little time to redraw. Just reboot the phone and stop clearing RAM. Android works in a way that it gets faster a couple of weeks after you start using it, when it learns your most preferred apps.

Damn now that is deep, I never knew that and Iam a dev haha. That goes to show you can learn something new everyday.

AHOK thanks for the reply! And is the RAM size right at 832? I presume its 1Gb and the rest is allocated to the OS and its just showing what's available ?

Depends on the S3 variant. There is a variant with 1GB RAM, and there is a variant with 2GB.

on an S3 no one should worry about RAM. Android was meant to use RAM. only those with cheaper or older devices with 256MB RAM or less have to be a bit concerned as the more apps you use, the more the OOM killer built into Android runs and slows the device down. my higher end devices like the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 use tons of RAM but seem to never slow down. i think the Tab 2 has 1GB and i am unsure how much the Nexus 7 has. only my phone, an older 256MB model has memory issues which needed rooting, minfree tweaks, and some broadcast receivers disabled to work well with the countless apps i installed and use.
