Galaxy S3 slow while updating apps

Just as the title says, my S3 chugs to almost a halt when apps are updating. I'll be using an app, or browsing the internet, and suddenly all my apps decide they want to update. Then my phone is basically useless until everything finishes updating.

Any thoughts on why this happens and what I can do to change it?

Go into the Play settings and turn auto-update off. Then you can decide when it's convenient for you to update them if desired.

Thank you, I'll make sure to do that.

Just for convenience sake when I actually do have to update apps, is there a fix for the issue? And is this a common thing?

Maybe update over wifi may speed things up.....I have my auto update turned off also as @mikedt suggested.

I had it set to "Auto update over Wifi only", so usually the updates happened after a long time of Wifi being off and then turning it back on.
