Galaxy S4 Active with 64Gb SD card

Hi. (I couldn't see where to post this so I'm guessing that SD cards are counted as accessories.)

I bought my Galaxy S4 Active a few weeks ago and the experience has been variable but generally improving as I get used to it. A week ago I put in a 64Gb memory card and it seems to have been causing problems.

I transferred my apps to the memory card where the settings screen allowed me to. That was all fine. I then moved all my music over.

Occasionally I would find that the home screen short cuts to the apps on the memory card would change to a generic icon but when I selected one of the apps all the icons would come back. Also the active wallpaper would stop working and that was one of the apps that had been moved onto the memory card. I could reselect the active wallpaper and it would work okay for a day or so. However the worst part was that the music players wouldn't read the music I'd moved over whereas they worked fine on the internal memory.

Today I turned the phone on after charging it overnight with it switched off. The wallpaper has disappeared, all the icons to apps on the external SD card have gone to generic blue and selecting them it reports "Application is not installed". (One of them was Tom Tom that cost me 30 quid!) A few minutes after seeing this the phone reported that the SD card is corrupt (I can't remember the exact words and I can't remember what I was doing that caused it to report that). It asked if I wanted to reformat the card.

So some questions:

Did I buy the wrong type of SD card? I couldn't see any specific specs in the manual about what I should install so I bought a Samsung branded card as follows:

Samsung 64Gb Class 10 UHS-1 Grade 1 70MB/s MicroSDXC Pro

Should I have formatted the card when I installed it? I didn

Okay I found it. It's reporting the damaged SD card in notification under Ongoing, it says:
"Damaged SD card
SD card is damaged. Try reformatting it."
