Help Galaxy S5 battery draining too fast

Ali92

Lurker
I really hope someone is able to help me find an appropriate solution. I have the Samsung galaxy S5 and for the past couple of months my battery has been draining faster than before, but recently (maybe past 3-4 days) it drains way too fast. Sometimes the battery will go down (from 6% to 1%) while it is being charged. It's driving me crazy. I'm a busy mom & student with a part time job. The constant need to charge my phone is very inconvenient. I don't use my phone too much either so I don't understand why it'll drop 10% of its battery life in just 10 minutes without being used. I'm hoping someone here can help. I thought about buying a new battery but I read some forums that suggested a battery saving app. I have the battery doctor and it hasn't helped, my battery drains just as fast as before. Every single time I optimize, it closes 20+ apps even if the last optimization was only 3 minutes ago. So is there a problem with my phone or does it sound like a new battery is needed?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Ali92 :)

Lets see if we can get you some more battery life.

Which model of Galaxy S5 do you have, as per #1.2 of 41 Galaxy S5 models - Dummies Guide?

As you have found, Battery Doctor is not much use and may, in the long term, be draining your battery even more. I would recommend uninstalling it.

Now it is time to clean your phone's cache partition as per #1.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide, Safe, simple and easy to do.

Next, have you got any of the following apps installed...

Apps that auto start or run in the background

1. Facebook

2. BlackBerry Messenger

3. 8 Ball Pool

4. Instagram

5. Messenger

6. WeChat

7. Facebook Pages Manager

8. Oovoo Video Call Text & Voice

9. KakaoTalk Free Calls & Text

10. Vine

Apps that are initiated by the user

1. Spotify

2. Amazon Kindle

3. Line Free Calls & Messages

4. Samsung WatchOn Video

5. Snapchat

6. Netflix

7. SoundCloud Music & Audio

8. CleanMaster Speed Booster

9. Tumblr

10. Picsart Photo Studio

As stated the battery optimizers and "task killers" will typically do more harm than good. I suggest you read this-

Without actually seeing your phone in person it's impossible to be 100% certain, but it's very possible that if you've had it for a while and it's gone through a lot of charge cycles that the battery has had it. One thing you can check visually is to open the back of the phone and remove the battery, and look at it. If it is at all swollen that is a sign that it's bad and should be replaced. I recently replaced the battery in my S5 after about a year of use, it wasn't doing quite what yours does but it was draining somewhat faster than it did originally and it was beginning to swell.
Problems with the charger and cable are also a possibility, if you haven't already done so it's a good idea to try different ones.

Uninstall Facebook, Facebook Messenger and turn off Location Services. Battery life will almost double. I did this as an experiment a few months ago and saw amazing results. Reinstalled FB and FB Messenger and battery life crumbled. I rarely use apps that need location turned on so I keep it off until I need it then I just swipe down, turn it on, use it then turn it off when done. With those three simple changes I got 48 hours on one charge...all things being equal.

There is one feature of the batteries we have in current phones that is NOT a good thing.

If you constantly allow them to discharge completely, or nearly so, you will hasten the death of a Lithium-Ion battery by Ten Fold....

The battery makers all suggest that we "try to" do the recharge at 40%
Also, install a Qi wireless charger in your phone, one that is guaranteed to work with 8mm spacing.

I have done that to all of my phones, every one of them...
If they are not "in use" and I'm in my office or at home, they are laying on a Qi charger pad....

here are some links that I just found.

http://www.amazon.com/Receiver-Ghostek-Standard-Wireless-GHOWIQI002/dp/B00Q54J8LC?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAJYE2C565R6BPOEKQ&tag=searchtempest-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00Q54J8LC

any Qi wireless receiver coil will work with any Qi charging pad.
some pads are stronger than others, I bought 4 of them, and use 3 of them. they are dirt cheap.

I use my phones pretty heavy, but I always have them 'on charge' at some point thru the day when a Qi charging pad happens to be close to me. I have never had to replace a battery, not in the last 6 years.... I practice keeping them charged.

On the S5, there is one little tiny thing you need to be aware of.
On the left side of the battery, there are 3 little gold plated contacts....
those are the charger's contacts to the phone.
There is nothing but "dead air" between those contacts and the rear case of the phone.
I found that for the Qi coils to work properly, you need to cut a little piece of a business card just big enough to cover that contact area..... do NOT let it overlay the rubber gasket, or the water proof seal is broken.

lay the phone face first flat on the table, lay the strip of paper over the contacts, carefully place the phone back on and press down firmly around the edges. do NOT pick it up until all the edges are sealed.

Can you go to battery status and post a screenshot so we can see what is a draining the battery? An app could be misbehaving and keeping the phone "awake"
