I don't recall this issue....
but for me, I have found that I get best results always, by turning on the "flashlight" mode and tell the camera "No Flash"
what this does is to illuminate the scene, allows you to preview the scene as the camera will see it if the "flash went off".... ie, the glare will obscure what you wanted.
with the Flash Light already on, the scene is lit up, and you can move the camera sideways, up/dn, to get the glare off of the image you need to capture.
Never had a negative type pix like you describe. Although, I do recall a setting that can do that, but never used it.
There is an optional camera app that I think you will enjoy called Camera FV-5
it has now become my Default Camera because it allows me to control a lot of things easily. Especially the ISO when a dark scene if being snapped, the ISO exposure control is on the side all the time, just touch and slide that until you get the exact lighting effect you want.
