Help Galaxy S5 miscellaneous files

Kizuna31

Lurker
Ok so I'm desperate enough now to create an account here to ask this question. What can I delete out of my miscellaneous files? They're taking up more than 1/3 of my phone's storage! 5.56 GB according to my storage space.

I'm going to list everything just to be safe. Some of these are obvious to me, some I'm wary of, but if anyone could tell me which ones it would be ok for me to delete that would be fantastic.
Ok here goes sorry this is long!

The ones I left above are ones that I would turn OFF or uninstall if a downloaded app. The stuff that came in the ROM you can't delete, but they can be turned OFF.

I got rid of polaris office as I don't use it. No two of us will have the same opinions on what is important..... except anything that relates to the system has to stay.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Kizuna31 :)

That's certainly a lot of, "stuff", you have on your phone.

There are 3 ways of approaching your problem...

1. Do a Full Wipe Factory Data Reset as per #2.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide. This guarantees that you start with a clean slate and that all rubbish is removed. It does, however, require some time and effort.

2. Google every instance of potential rubbish that you have and research how it affects your current setup. Again, very time consuming.

3. Cheat! Probably not a popular suggestion for some but you could install Clean Master, free from the Play Store, and let it analyse your phone for Junk Files and then get it to clean them up. Generally speaking, this is the only aspect of this app that I use as most of it tends to be snake oil fixes and encouragements to download more apps. If nothing else it can help whittle down some of the junk on there and free up some space.

The only option it's giving me it to delete...is that hat you mean by turn them off? And yeah I thought about getting rid of office but it's a bloatware on my phone so it's stuck I guess -.- that and NFLmobile

Thanks! I think I may try the second one...I can't download an app right now -.- my phone is too full from all that stuff above

yes, Delete/Uninstall/Turn OFF

( if you see Remove, that only takes an icon off the screen)

If it allows delete, then do it, but that usually means "uninstall" which is the same time.... but this only works for stuff you downloaded and installed yourself.

bloatware, ie, stuff that was on the phone as released by the carrier, can't be uninstalled, so there you will have to be content with "turn OFF". the app is dormant, and not running, which is the important thing.

I have a question. What rmsINFO.txt is..? I have a Samsung G386T1.

Thanks I'm advice

May I ask what is requests.log ?

I noticed one was created on my phone as well. What is that file for and how it gets created ?

Can anyone answer the question of where all the Miscellaneous Files space is being consumed?

It appears to me that this thread is a case of failing to see the forest through the trees. The list of files given my Kizuna31 totals to about 109MB. So even if all of those files were deleted, the Misc Files would still consume 5.45GB. And the last few posts were focused on individual files that were measured in Kb!

So what is taking up the other +5GB? I am not critical yet, but have the same encroaching issue. Much of my 16GBs are taken up by System Memory (4.82GB), Used Space (4.69MB), Cached Data (408MB), Misc Files (3.91GB) leaving 2.2GB of available space.

My Misc Files list is about 220MB. So if I spend hours working figuring out what can be removed from that list, I might get all the way up to 2.4GB of free space. As Chris Farley said "Well la de fricking da!" Where is the other 3.7GB in Misc Files?

Another related question - why do these files not show up as part of the App Size calculations? An example, Waze. I had a 108MB Waze file in Misc Files. Yet according to the App data the sizes for Waze were App - 38MB, SD Card App - 51MB, Data - 9.6 MB, Cache - 3MB. The 108MB Misc File entry doesn't show up.

Then as a test of Misc File removability, I deleted that one. The App File size doesn't change. BTW, after deleting the file, Waze launched but wouldn't display the map. a reinstall fixed that. All to free up 100 MB of memory.

You rocked it @JTrocker The files listed under "Miscellaneous Files" don't add up in any way to the 5.56GB that is 1/3 of my space. I have read five different forums/options and have tried:

  • going through application manager and hitting "Clear Data" on anything with sizable data
  • doing a soft re-set
  • turning "off" (basically "uninstalling updates" or "disabling" ) many aps that I don't use but don't want to eliminate
  • deleting unwanted apps
  • deleting the cache through the android manager
  • going into Verizon and asking for help since I have a Verizon version (G900V )...TOTALLY useless
I still have 5.54GB of Misc Files and about 1.4GB of available space

Hi, the only sure way to get rid of junk is to do a factory reset, then using the built in application manager turn off all apps you don't want, or uninstall if given the option. I realise that this means a lot of work reinstalling, but it is probably the best method. Phil

I did a complete factory reset, to no avail, miscellaneous files still say 5.47GB, when I opened the files there is less than 100 meg there, I did not let the system reload a single app other than what Verizon or google auto load. I did the reset because I was unable to do updates, not enough memory. I have minimal apps, photos and music. I keep photos down loaded to save space. I had more apps, music and photos on my previous phones (iphone 5s, 2 different Motorola droids) with no problem at all. I should not have to add a micro sd card to keep the phone working but I will. NO more Samsung phones. I am open to any suggestions, at factory resets now, now is the time to try to correct before I reload my apps and some music. Thank you for any help you can suggest.

My daughter and I both have an S5 and we are in the same boat. We have the extra memory card and have moved all apps to it that can be along with all pictures being stored on that card so what is taking up all the room? I can not do my system updates or other updates because something is taking up all the room. My daughter went ahead and did the factory reset and she is still having the same problems. It doesn't seem to completely delete everything and when you look at what is taking up space it seems to be mostly in misc files but it doesn't show you what that really is. This is a huge issue that seems to be a bug of some sort. Any other suggestions or help on this?

HI GUYS I WAS SO UPSET WHEN I SEEN THIS ..I WAS THINKING AN SD CARD WOULD SAVE ME FROM SITUATIONS LIKE THIS BUT GIVEN THE FACT THAT IM HERE SAYS OTHERWISE...

I HAD ABOUT 5.8GB BEING DESTROYED BY MISCELLANEOUS FILE STORAGE ..I EVEN DID SOME TESTS AND SACRIFICED MY STUDIO FILES..(EDITED PICS ETC.) THATS GONE ..BUT I NOTICED THE MISC FILE DECREASED. MISC. FILES I THINK ARE INFORMATION SUCH AS PICS VIDEOS TEXT FILES ETC. THAT ARE IN THE DEVICE , BACKGROUND MAYBE

..THE BEST EXAMPLE I CAN GIVE WHICH IS WHY IM HERE IS THAT I FIXED MY ISSUE...I WAS STRUGGLING WITH ABOUT 3 OR SO GB OF SPACE LEFT AND LIKE I SAID 5.8 WAS BEING TAKEN UP BY MISC. FILES. DO NOT DELETE THUMBNAILS WHICH MINES SAID ABOUT 168MB ..ITHINK THAT IS CALCULATING THE THUMBNAIL FILESS..SO IN FACT IF I DELETE THE THUMBNAIL FILES ..IT WILL DELETE ALL YOUR PICTURES STORED!.. JUST LIKE IT DID TO MY STUDIO FILE..GLADLY I ONLY HAD ABOUT 20 PICS. MY HOPES TO YOU ALL IS PRIVATE PICS AND VIDEOS... I HAD ABOUT 68 PRIVATE VIDS AND PHOTOS . ABOUT 3 VIDEOS TOOK UP ABOUT 3.5 GB! THEY DONT GOTO MY SD CARD THEY ARE STORED IN THE PHONE AS MISC. I JUST MOVED THEM TO MY COMPUTER AND DELETED THEM ON MY PHONE. I TRIED TO UPLOAD A SCREEN SHOT BUT ILL JUST READ MY CURRENT INFO NOW

SYSTEM MEMORY 4.51BG (THIS CANT BE CHANGED UNLESS YOUR A MODDER OR SOMETHING OR AND UPDATE OCCURS IGUESS)

USED SPACE 3.17 GB (THIS IS APPLICATIONS YOU DOWNLOAD AND PICS AND VIDS THAT ARE ON THE DEVICE STORAGE NOT SD CARD)

CACHED DATA (I CLEAR THIS ALL THE TIME YOU CAN TOO) 2.93MB

MISC FILES (SOB FILE) 697MB!! USED TO BE 5.6~GB SO 0.697GB NOW IT IS STILL BLOATED BUT I DID SOME JUSTICE
AVAILABLE SPACE 7.64 GB

SD CARD TOTAL SPACE 29.71GB
AVAIL. SPACE 16.76GB

THERES HAS ALSO BEEN AN UPDATE TRYING TO DOWNLOAD FOR THE PAST WEEK FOR AT&T ..PROBABLY NOW IT WILL HAPPEN SINCE I FREED UP SOME SPACE .. HOPE THIS HELPS GUYS!

I have been having a similar issue. I also had downloaded a cleaning app and so far it does clean out junk but it just never is enough. I continually keep running out of space. I also ended having to delete/remove/u install more than half of my apps, most of the ones remaining I moved to my sd card, well at least the ones I could move, and all my images and videos are on my SD card as well. All my documents I have saved are on my SD card too. My issue now is that with all that done, I seem to have a lot less space than before deleting and installing and moving things out of internal storage. I have gone into myFiles and gone through every folder and most of them are empty. I don't understand where all the stuff taking up so much room is at.

SOLVED! at least for me...

I've been trying to figure this out for a while... and through trial and error found that one of my apps was eating my disk space in a not typical way...

I had my phone rooted and noted the my system files were double what they added up to be... Thinking that something I did along the way was the problem, I updated my phone from 5.0 to the latest OS (loosing my root), but the file anomaly just shifted over to the Misc files allotment. I was at 5 gigs of misc files, but only 32 megs was actually being found...so I went through app by app, moving what would move to my SD card, and disabling all the bloatware...still no change..

It wasn't until I was inside my Smugmug app that I looked at the setting within it and noticed that I could direct it to the SD card from within the app (it wouldn't move via the android App manager). The move took about an hour it seemed from within the app, but when it was done, my 5gigs of Misc files were gone!!!!! rather, all moved to my SD card in the form of files related to the Smugmug app (which don't seem to show up as thumbnails or images I can delete manually, but have to be managed from the app itself)..

Anyway, you've got a weird app eating your data in a weird way...find how it's handing your files and you'll find where you data is being eaten up from.

SOLUTION:
For spotify users anyways.
If you had spotify premium, then didn't have premium but didnt uninstall the app, then got premium again, (I. E. Month 1: spotify premium, month 2: not premium but app is still on phone), month 3: get spitify premium & download songs for offline use again) your songs downloaded twice. Don't ask me why this happens because I don't know. But I just went from 4.5 gb of misc storage to 119mb. Redownloading songs is tedious but hey, it works :) hope I could help someone
