Galaxy S5 SM-G900A - need tethering enabled

Greetings all.

I just moved my account from AT&T to Cricket (Samsung Galaxy S5 - SM-G900A) and can't seem to get tethering working. I tried to purchase the $10/mo tethering option at the store but the Cricket representative was unable to add the option (something about they only enable tethering only on the phones *they* sell).

I tried rooting this device using the OneClickRoot utility but the rooting process failed (no root available yet). The device is running Android 6.0.1 with security patch level "October 1, 2016". I figure I can use a 3rd party tethering utility if I can get the unit rooted.

Any help please? I just need to get tethering enabled again as this is a work phone. Is it possible to root this phone now that I am on Cricket, or do I need to get a new phone?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Ron Kelley :)

I am afraid that the U.S. carrier minority variant for AT&T, model G900A, is unrootable thanks to AT&T's policies. See #1.6 of 42 Galaxy S5 models - Dummies Guide for more information.

Thanks for the reply. As I suspected, my phone can only run official AT&T software.

After reading your reply, I downloaded the PdaNet+ package and was able to tether via USB. So far, so good (minor disconnects). Looks like I can either spend $8 for the USB tethering software or $150-300 for a new phone. I opt for the $8 software:)

Really appreciate the fast reply...
