my phone Will start up, go past the Samsung screen, then goes to the Verizon image and freezes there. I cannot get into safe mode. I can get into to do a factory reset however. I did try deleting the cache and partitions. Did not help. I'm not savvy with thes phones.

Was the phone rooted? Was the phone dropped or immersed in water prior to this happening?
If not try Smart switch or use this since you have Verizon.

Download mode is volume down, home and power at the same time.

I don't know if the phone was rooted. I did not modify the phone if that matters. As for dropping/ water, I have dropped the phone previously. Do keep it in a case however No exposure to water. I'll look into smart switch. Is there anything particular I need to know in using this?

Honestly i have only used Smart switch once for a client in S Africa. As far as i remember you put the phone in download mode and it reflashes the firmware. Not sure if it backs things up or if you have a need to back anything up.

I'm more used to using Odin and a stock tar file from Sammobile. The Verizon repair tool and Smart switch are very straight forward. If it asks to manually boot into download mode. Power off the phone, hold volume down, home and power at the same time and at the warning press volume up. Then reconnect the phone.

I haven't used Smart Switch but with Kies 3 you would select Tools on the top bar. Select Firmware upgrade and initialization. Enter your phones model and serial number when prompted and Kies will download the firmware and flash it for you with your phone in download mode.
The Verizon Software Update and Repair tool does the same but also backs up your phone and reloads your data. With the tool, you select repair, put your phone in download mode then connect to pc and follow the prompts.

JamesL and Jfalls63,

Thanks for trying to help me. I took the phone to Samsung techs and they tried to reinstall the OS, but we're unable. Phone had to have a factory reset. Lesson learned.... put and SD card in the phone and save my important stuff there!

Thanks again!!
