Gallery "no items in collection"

So I took a picture of some mail I had just received and I tried accessing my gallery and it says "no items in collection." I went back to the camera and it shows the little pic of items in gallery through the camera but not the gallery app. I have restarted and Force closing the gallery app but nothing works. any ideas?

Should be able to fix with just a reboot but poolshark's suggesstion works too, esp if reboot doesnt fix it.

Clearing the cache wont delete your pictures it just deletes the list of pictures android keeps in a db that may have been corrupted.

Really though it's more likely that the db is closed/crashed (but not corrupted) and the db app (an internal sql app) will not reboot for awhile so just rebooting your phone fixes this most often.

Rebooting alone never fixes it for me.
I used to be able to fix it by clearing the data in the media gallery and deleting .thumbnails in DCIM, that doesn't work anymore either.

rebooting didnt work for me, ill back up my pics and try again. It has shown up once out of no where but it wasnt all my pics, just a few. didnt have downloaded pics or anything else except what my camera took. ill try this and let ya know. thanks.
