General compatability of most android apps?

Hey guys, hows it going? I'm considering on purchasing the Nexus One tomorrow when its released for verizon and i have a question before i make the purchase. I know google is having some problems with fragmentation of the android phones which makes it hard for developers make apps that work with everything out there. Of course it makes it harder with 3rd parties skin it (sense, blur , ect..) or maybe when new OS revisions come out that you must have newer hardware for it to support. I guess my question is how bad is it? Do you think everyone is going to be constantly fighting with app compatibility?

I currently have a BB Tour (which i hate) and of course the app market sucks but i can see even BB affected by this a little (even when BB controls hardware/software). For example most of weatherbug works but the maps have never worked. One of the main reasons i want to go to android is for the apps but i don't want to be fighting app compatability on the phone all the time. Of course apple is the perfect example of how it ought to be with the iphone and it looks like WP7 will have good handle on it too.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
Ncage
